University Scholars Leadership Symposium
The University Scholars Leadership Symposium (USLS) is a week-long leadership development training program organized by Humanitarian Affairs Asia. The University of Rochester sends a delegation of students to learn from international human rights leaders and change agents, create connections with peers from across the globe, participate in a service learning project, and serve as representatives of the University. Visit the USLS website to learn more about the objectives and program schedule.
The 10th annual University Scholars Leadership Symposium will be held at the Istana Budaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from August 1–7, 2019. Students stay in one of three official hotels sanctioned by USLS and lodging expenses are included in the registration fee. A complimentary shuttle is provided to and from the symposium location each day.
Interested students participate in a competitive selection process to be chosen to represent the University of Rochester. Students are selected based on merit, and a limited amount of funding to help offset registration, airfare, and lodging costs is available to selected students based on financial need. Students selected for the UR delegation will be required to participate in at least one pre-departure orientation meeting in the spring semester, as well as reflection activities during and after the symposium.
Ideal delegates will be able to clearly demonstrate a passion for community engagement and global citizenship, will have a clear plan for sharing their lessons learned at USLS with the campus community upon their return, and will be able to quickly dive into the symposium’s activities despite the rigors of long-distance travel and navigating a new culture. Candidates must be enrolled on campus in the fall 2019 semester, and preference will be given to rising sophomores and juniors.
Applicants should apply online by Monday, March 11, 2019 at 11:59 p.m.
