Fulbright US Student Grant Program

Among American colleges and universities, the University of Rochester is consistently a top producer of Fulbright US Student Grant Program recipients.

Sponsored by the Department of State since 1946, the Fulbright US Student Program aims to promote mutual understanding and peace between the United States and other nations through educational and cultural exchange. Recipients conduct research, pursue advanced studies, and assist in teaching English communication skills and American culture abroad, while also participating in a wide range of self-initiated community engagement endeavors in their host countries.
Fulbright recipients who participate in the program meet, work, live, and learn from residents of the host country, sharing daily experiences over one academic year.
Applicants typically seek endorsement by their college or university’s Fulbright evaluation committee. Rochester has two committees: one at the Eastman School of Music and one based on the River Campus.
Among US colleges and universities, the University regularly appears in the Chronicle of Higher Education’s list of top Fulbright producers for US student grant winners. That includes the 2023–24 academic year, with 12 recipients chosen to study abroad out of 40 applicants and 22 semifinalists.
