A key to restoring sight may be held in a drug that treats alcoholism

Researchers including Michael Telias, an assistant professor of ophthalmology, of neuroscience, and at the Center for Visual Science, may have found a way to revive some vision loss caused by age-related macular degeneration—the leading cause of blindness—in the drug disulfiram, which is used to treat alcoholism.

Update on new positive cases of COVID-19

There are 23 new positive cases among students to report: one on the Eastman Campus, and 22 on the River Campus. Please note that the University’s COVID-19 Dashboard is updated when a new case is reported. Find the latest COVID-19 messages and updates here.

UR Procurement (P2P) Marketplace upgraded

Over the weekend, the UR Procurement Marketplace successfully underwent a scheduled upgrade. Users will not notice changes as a result of the upgrade. Email procurement_service_center@ur.rochester.edu or call (585) 275-2012 if you have questions.

Flags will be lowered for Laura Price

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered Tuesday, March 29, for Laura Price, an assistant professor of pediatrics, who died on March 11. Price joined the University faculty in 2018.

The Office of Orientation and First-Year Programs is holding a virtual information session at 3 p.m. EDT today, March 22, for interested AS&E undergraduate students to learn more about the fall 2022 Welcome Week volunteer position. Welcome Week volunteers help staff events and activities to welcome new students and their families to River Campus in August. Perks include early move-in (if living on campus), complimentary limited meals, and a free T-shirt. Register here to receive the link. Wilson Commons Student Activities hiring for fall

Join a team dedicated to meaningful experiences beyond the classroom. As a member of Wilson Commons Student Activities, you’ll be involved in providing services and resources to the campus community. AS&E Graduate Research Symposium

Graduate students, faculty, and staff in AS&E are invited to the AS&E Graduate Research Symposium on Wednesday, March 23, from 3 to 5 p.m. EDT in the Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons. More than 50 graduate students from a variety of disciplines will be showcasing posters of their research and will be available to discuss their work. The symposium includes a poster session and will conclude with an awards ceremony for selected posters and presenters with remarks by Nick Vamivakas, dean of graduate education and postdoctoral affairs for AS&E.

Gather together for a well-being session

University employees can choose from over 25 topics that may interest their teams and organize a presentation through Well-U. Sessions are held at no cost and are full of information to better your health. Browse the partner selections from the lifestyle management team, UR Medicine EAP, and Inward Office and complete a Well-U department request form to get started.

TIAA and cybersecurity

Part of TIAA’s commitment is to help protect participant assets. TIAA will be mailing information on cybersecurity, sharing details of an ongoing nationwide fraud scam, and providing tips to help protect your assets. You can also join a webinar hosted by TIAA’s Information Security team and learn how you can protect yourself and your family from cybercriminal social engineering today, March 22, at 1 p.m. EDT. Register to attend.

Talk on Ukrainian statehood

John Hewko, general secretary and CEO of Rotary International, presents a talk that will focus on the development of Ukrainian statehood since the fall of the Soviet Union, the country’s accomplishments and continuing challenges, and the effect of the Russian invasion on Ukraine’s future. “Ukrainian Statehood: Past, Present, and Future,” sponsored by the Russian Studies Program, takes place Wednesday, March 23, at 3:30 p.m. EDT via Zoom.

Webinar to launch accreditation self-study

The University is currently in the process of renewing its institutional accreditation with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). As an MSCHE-accredited institution, Rochester secures its designation as a qualified institute of higher learning and is granted access to federal funding. The first part of the MSCHE process includes a two-year institutional self-review to explore key components of the University, including student learning experiences, institutional mission and goals, organizational governance, and much more. Attend an online information session on Tuesday, March 29, from 4 to 5 p.m. to learn how you can be part of this important process.

Warner Wednesday talk on accessibility in college for neurodiverse students

Neurodiverse college students face barriers in access. Faculty and staff can lead the way through Universal Design for Learning to make college more accessible.
