CAREER awards recognize role models in research, education
Five University researchers have received the National Science Foundation’s Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award, which recognizes early-career faculty: Thomas Howard, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering; Ross Maddox, an associate professor of biomedical engineering and neuroscience; Sreepathi Pai, an assistant professor of computer science; and Andrea Pickel and Jessica Shang, assistant professors of mechanical engineering. The award provides recipients five years of funding to help lay the foundation for their future research.

Deep in the bile ducts, researchers explore how cancer arises
Research led by Aram Hezel, the John and Ethel Heselden Professor in the Department of Medicine and chief of hematology and oncology at Wilmot Cancer Center, shows how gene mutations fuel the growth of bile duct cancer, a rare but aggressive type of liver cancer that has been on the rise in the US.

Eastman School wellness fair rescheduled for September 2
The Eastman wellness fair will take place Friday, September 2, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Student Living Center and is open to all Eastman School of Music students. The fair brings together over 17 campus resources, student groups, and Rochester community organizations to educate on wellness practices and resources. Engage in interactive activities, find free swag, and get your hearing health tested.
Writing groups for Arts, Sciences & Engineering undergrads

Program provides safer-sex supplies for students
Safe Sex Express, a program created by the UR Student Health Advisory Committee (URSHAC), delivers safer-sex supplies to on-campus student mailboxes. Learn more and place an order here.
Take part in a live Q&A with producer and actor Aubrey Plaza on Friday, September 2, at 8 p.m. in Strong Auditorium. Tickets to see Plaza can be purchased online or at the Common Market in Wilson Commons and are available for students, faculty, staff, and the general public.
Substance abuse, mental illness resource fair
Join community organizations and the Medical Center’s Mental Health and Wellness Strong Recovery services for a resource fair for individuals diagnosed with a mental illness or substance use disorder and their families. The event takes place at Brighton Health Center, 2613 West Henrietta Road, on Friday, September 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Find information on local resources in the fields of mental health, housing, substance use, and more while enjoying music and snacks from local food trucks.
Eastman Faculty Artist Series concerts
The Eastman Faculty Artist Series will feature 11 performances for the fall 2022 semester, and feature Eastman School of Music’s world-renowned and internationally acclaimed faculty members. Tickets for the series are $10 for the general public and free to current season subscribers. General admission tickets will be available for purchase at each concert.
