New, multidisciplinary department will help families achieve their breastfeeding goals

The Medical Center’s new Division of Breastfeeding and Lactation is a multidisciplinary department made up of breastfeeding medicine providers, dentists, toxicologists for medication consulting, family medicine physicians, and researchers to promote and advance breastfeeding. The division will provide a variety of services for patients and work to make breastfeeding accessible for families who may face obstacles due to socio-economic barriers or lack of institutional support.

Grand rounds lecture on historic institutionalized racism and obstetric outcomes

Attend the next public health grand rounds webinar, “Modern Echoes of Historic Institutionalized Racism: Associations Between Previously Redlined Districts and Current Obstetric Outcomes,” presented by Stefanie Hollenbach, an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology. ‘Removing the Burrs’ event with Native American and Indigenous Affairs working group

The Equity and Inclusion Council of Deans and Directors and the Native American and Indigenous Affairs working group present “Removing the Burrs” on Monday, October 17, from noon to 1 p.m. EDT. This virtual program was created with the hopes of grounding the committee’s work to strengthen relationships between Indigenous nations, the University, and neighboring communities. Learn more about the event and register in advance to attend.

Study examines the genetics of iron absorption

Rochester is conducting a study with Cornell University to look at the genetics of iron status and absorption, and the gut microbiome’s involvement in how the body absorbs iron and is recruiting healthy adult men or women of East Asian or Northern European descent to participate. The study involves two visits to the University, two blood draws, consumption of an iron supplement, and answering questions about your health and diet. Individuals that complete the study will receive an analysis of their genetic ancestry and up to $30. If you are healthy, not pregnant or lactating, a non-smoker, between the ages of 18–50, and are interested in learning more, send an email or call (607) 279-0421.

medium

Masking when around other people indoors is strongly encouraged, especially for those who are at increased risk of severe illness if they become infected. Patient care areas, as well as University shuttles and transportation, continue to require masking. A full description of Medical Center masking requirements is available on the URMC Intranet (University network access required).
