Anna Rosensweig, an associate professor of French and of visual and cultural studies, explains how early modern resistance theory is inspiring far-right individuals to defy local, state, and federal laws.

MAG Announces Michael Marsh as interim director

Michael Marsh, chief operating officer and deputy director of the Memorial Art Gallery, has been appointed as the interim director. He takes over for Jonathan Binstock, who accepted a new position as the director and CEO of the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC. Marsh has an accomplished career in both the public and private sectors and brings more than 30 years of experience in business management, organizational development, strategic planning, legal practice, and non-profit board service to the museum. The Memorial Art Gallery Board of Managers and University leadership will soon begin a national search, focused on identifying a director and CEO in the new year.

Gift establishes professorship at Eastman

A $1.5 million gift from Susan Ain ’78E and her husband, Aron Ain, establishes the Susan and Aron Ain Professorship for Violin at the Eastman School of Music. The professorship will support, recognize, and honor as well as attract and retain exemplary faculty.

New FLASH code expands possibilities for physics experiments

The Flash Center for Computational Science recently announced a notable milestone: researchers have developed a new version of the FLASH code, the first official update of the code since the center moved to Rochester from the University of Chicago. The new version of the code, FLASH v4.7, increases the accuracy of simulations of magnetized plasmas and drastically expands the range of laboratory experiments the code can model.

Workshop on ChatGPT AI chatbot

ChatGPT, an AI chatbot with a simple interface that can generate written responses to a variety of prompts, has garnered significant attention during its period of free access and it is already being used by students and instructors in higher education. Rochester instructors are invited to attend a workshop that will provide a brief look at ChatGPT, explore relevant teaching and learning principles, and devote the majority of the time to Q&A. Register to attend from 3 to 4 p.m. EST on Tuesday, January 17, or Wednesday, January 18. Contact the Teaching Center with questions.

Sit in with the Zen meditation group

Join the Zen Meditation Group via Zoom for alternating biweekly sessions on Thursdays from 5 to 6 p.m. EST starting on January 12 and Mondays from 6 to 7 p.m. EST starting on January 16. ‘Changing Perspectives Through the Arts’ event

Rachel Hall, a professor of English in the creative writing program at the State University of New York at Geneseo, presents “Short Stories on Gun Violence,” the next installment of the “Changing Perspectives Through the Arts” series, a collaboration of the Department of Health Humanities and Bioethics, Eastman Performing Arts Medicine, and Rochester community organizations. Share the warmth: a coat drive for patients in need

Friends of Strong, Advantage Federal Credit Union, and Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department are collecting clean, gently used—or new—men’s winter coats for patients in need who are being discharged from the hospital throughout the winter months. Donation collection boxes are located in the hospital’s main lobby, and on the ground floor between the University ID and post offices located just inside the 256 Crittenden Blvd. loop. The general public may use the donation bin located outside of Advantage’s Penfield branch at 2515 Browncroft Blvd. Call (585) 275-2420 with questions or if you would like to arrange a collection drive in your location or department.
