Eastman Wind Ensemble celebrates 70 years

The Eastman Wind Ensemble, a pioneering force in the symphonic wind band movement, will celebrate the 70th anniversary of its founding with a week of performances, lectures, and conducting master classes January 25–29 at the Eastman School of Music. Find the full schedule here.

TODAY’S UPDATES

Flags will be lowered for Debra Haring

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered Tuesday, January 24, for Debra Haring, assistant dean of grants and contracts in the School of Arts & Sciences, who died on December 27. Haring joined the University staff in 1999.


FOR STUDENTS

Academic success coaching now open at the Learning Center

Are you struggling with study skills like time management, organization, and exam preparation? Consider making an appointment with an academic success coach. You can meet with them for one-on-one sessions at the Learning Center in Dewey Hall, Room 1-154, to discuss your concerns and discover new learning and studying techniques. This program uses the scheduling system WC Online and serves students in AS&E, Simon Business School, and Warner School of Education.

Attend Ganondagan’s Native American Winter Games

Students are invited to join the Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center on Saturday, February 18, for a free bus trip to Seneca Art and Culture Center at Ganondagan in Victor for the center’s annual Native American Winter Games.

Celebrate and discover the Seneca ways of winter through traditional Native American activities including dog sledding demonstrations, snow boats, snow snake, snowshoeing, storytelling, wampum learning center, Iroquois Creation Story film, the Seneca Art and Culture Center Gallery, and Iroquois White Corn–inspired foods available for purchase. Admission is free. The bus will leave River Campus at 9:45 a.m. and return by 2 p.m. Spots are limited, RSVP here. Email bic@rochester.edu with questions.

Free STI testing clinics

Did you know the most common symptom of a sexually transmitted infection is no symptoms at all? Sign up for an appointment to get tested for STIs at one of the UHS Health Promotion Office’s free testing clinics throughout the semester. Clinics are open to all undergraduate and graduate students.

Workshop on effective management and mentoring of TAs

Part of the Teaching Center’s spring 2023 workshop series, this Zoom workshop from noon to 1 p.m. EST on Friday, January 20, will offer Rochester instructors strategies for coordinating, supervising, and mentoring teaching assistants in large and coordinated courses. Register here.

Instructional needs survey launches January 23

The Teaching Center will launch an instructional needs survey on Monday, January 23. The anonymous survey will take 10 minutes to complete, and responses will inform teaching support services as well as classroom and learning space planning. The survey will be distributed by email to instructors of all ranks and schools who teach AS&E courses, and to all AS&E faculty. Virtual salary negotiation workshop

Whether you’re negotiating for a new job, or an earned raise or promotion, gain confidence in your negotiation style. Join Rachel Roberts ’03E, director of the Institute for Music Leadership and an associate professor of music leadership, on Wednesday, February 1, at 6:30 p.m. EST for an interactive virtual workshop and learn how to identify your personal value, develop an arsenal of negotiation strategies, and conduct market research to benchmark a target salary and benefits. Summer@Eastman discounts

Summer@Eastman offers various discounts towards its noncredit programs, institutes, and online workshops. Discounts include a 10 percent discount for current Eastman Community Music School students who are enrolled in the current academic-year semesters; a tuition waiver and 25 percent off tuition for eligible University employees; and a $100 discount for alumni or current Eastman School of Music and University music students.

Rochester alumnus Paul Frommer ’65

Na’vi, the fictional language created by Rochester alumnus Paul Frommer ’65, has returned to movie theaters with the release of Avatar: The Way of Water—the first of a number of planned sequels to the Academy Award-winning Avatar. Already an international phenomenon, Avatar: The Way of Water has grossed more than $1.9 billion worldwide to become the sixth highest-grossing movie of all time.
