Search underway for Medical Center CEO, SMD dean, and senior vice president for health sciences

A national search is underway for the position of CEO of the Medical Center, dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry, and senior vice president for health sciences. Current CEO Mark Taubman announced in September 2022 that he will step away from the leadership role following the completion of his current term, which concludes at the end of the calendar year. The search committee is chaired by Elizabeth Milavec, executive vice president for administration and finance, CFO, and treasurer. The search firm of SpencerStuart is assisting with the recruiting of highly qualified candidates to serve in this key leadership role. Find more information regarding the search committee.

Food Pantry summer orders and hours

Because Wilson Commons will be closed for renovations starting May 15, the Food Pantry will be moving to online bag orders for the summer starting May 6. Find up-to-date information and building hours online.

Senior Week tower tours

River Campus Libraries is offering Rush Rhees Tower Tours for graduating students and their families throughout Senior Week. Don’t miss the opportunity to see the University from 186 feet up. Tours will take place from 12:30 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 9; Wednesday, May 10; and Thursday, May 11. The line for the tours will form at the Rush Rhees Q&i Desk. Be prepared to wait to go up, depending on how many people are ahead of you.

PhD training program on augmented and virtual reality

University PhD students from multiple departments, including biomedical engineering, brain and cognitive sciences, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, neuroscience, or optics are invited to apply for cross-training in augmented and virtual reality.

The deadline for paid fellowship applications, offered to US citizens and permanent residents only, is July 25. The deadline for the general trainee program is August 15.

Aging Research Day

Sponsored by the University Committee on Interdisciplinary Studies and the University’s Aging Institute, Aging Research Day will be held today, May 8, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Goergen Hall, Room 101. The event features a variety of talks on aging research from Medical Center and River Campus faculty. The day will culminate with a keynote delivered by Daniel Belsky, an associate professor of epidemiology at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and the Robert N. Butler Columbia Aging Center, on the quantification of biological aging. Learn more.


THIS WEEK IN UNIVERSITY HISTORY

Hospital groundbreaking; Hutchison Hall opens

1969: Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new Strong Memorial Hospital were held May 14. University officers were joined by city and county officials, faculty, staff, and students for the event. Allan Anderson, the hospital’s executive director, acted as master of ceremonies. Read more about the Medical Center’s history.

1973: A full day of public events on May 11 marked the formal opening of Hutchison Hall. The celebration included talks by noted scientists, building tours, and a special inaugural program. The building, which houses the chemistry, biology, and earth and environmental sciences departments, is named for Charles Force Hutchison who was a University trustee from 1932 to 1959 and a member of the board of managers of the Eastman School of Music.
