Get to know Pennsylvania governor—and Commencement speaker—Josh Shapiro

Josh Shapiro ’95 was elected governor of Pennsylvania last November—the first Rochester alumnus to hold a state’s top executive position. Learn more about Shapiro, who will deliver the address at the University-wide 2023 Commencement Ceremony on May 12, including his time at Rochester, his unplanned veer into politics, and his advice for graduating students. Students, alumni receive national awards for global study, teaching, and research

Each year, Rochester students and recent graduates receive national awards based on academic success, research endeavors, and community contributions through leadership and service.

Wilson Commons closing for summer on May 15

Due to several construction projects, including the creation of a Campus Information Center, Wilson Commons will close on May 15 and reopen in mid-August. Contact wcsa@rochester.edu with questions.

  • Douglass Commons, Spurrier, and the public space in Genesee Hall will be open for meeting and activity space.
  • Dining Services will provide summer dining options in other locations during the closure. Tasty Tuesdays will be back again this summer as a lunch option.
  • The offices that are located in Wilson Commons will be available via email and phone. Wilson Commons Student Activities will have a desk staffed on the third floor of Genesee Hall during weekday business hours.
  • The Food Pantry will be accessible this summer by placing an online grocery bag order.
  • Are you an undergraduate staying in Rochester for the summer?  Check out summer events on CCC.

Bursar's Office, ISO hours and operations for Friday

Bursar’s Office onsite operations, including the information window in Meliora Hall, will not be available on Friday, May 12. Staff will be available by phone during regularly scheduled telephone hours and by email during regular business hours.

The International Services Office Service Desk will be open from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday. Virtual advising drop-ins, phone, and email operations will still be available. If you have an immigration emergency while the office is closed, contact the Department of Public Safety at (585) 275-3333.

Possible meteorite crashes through New Jersey home

“Metal meteorites are particularly interesting to us because these are construction debris left over from the assembly of the solar system 4.5 billion years ago,” says Adam Frank, the Helen F. and Fred H. Annual toxicology retreat

Attend the annual toxicology training program retreat on Thursday, May 25. The keynote lecture, “Advancing Regulatory Science at FDA: New Approach Methodologies,” will be given by Suzanne Fitzpatrick, senior advisor for toxicology at the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition at the FDA, from 11 a.m. to noon in the Adolph Lower Auditorium (1-7619), Medical Center. The event also features trainee platform presentations and a trainee poster session. Email Alyssa Merrill for more information.


SOCIAL MEDIA SPOTLIGHT

For the second time in team history and for the second year in a row, the University’s men’s ultimate frisbee team has qualified for Division III Nationals, claiming the sole bid in their region. They head to Columbus, Ohio, the weekend of May 20 for the chance to represent Rochester on the national stage. Good luck, Yellowjackets!
