FACULTY/ADMINISTRATION

Abram R. Boone '29E, '58E (MM), senior instructor emeritus in violin at the Eastman School of Music, died May 10, 2000. He was 93.

Boone, who also was assistant concertmaster of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, began teaching violin and viola at Eastman in 1947. He was named emeritus instructor in 1973.

Frequently performing in the Rochester community as a violin soloist, Boone also was a member and concertmaster of the Sinfonietta of the Lake Placid Club.

Emory Cowen, a professor of psychology and psychiatry who is credited with revolutionizing mental health care with the introduction of prevention programs, died November 30, 2000. He was 74 years old.

In 1957, Cowen and his colleagues initiated the Primary Mental Health Project, an experimental program that identified moderately troubled primary school children and, in a one-to-one setting, helped them learn to resolve conflicts and cope better.

A member of the Rochester faculty for 40 years, Cowen received several of the top awards in his field, including the American Psychological Association's Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest, and served as the associate or advisory editor of several journals.

Cowen earned his bachelor's degree from Brooklyn College in 1944 and his doctorate from Syracuse University in 1950.

A memorial fund in Cowen's name has been established at the Mt. Hope Family Center, 187 Edinburgh St.,Rochester, N.Y. 14608.

William Greene, a founder of the University's Medical-Psychiatric Liaison Group and a pioneer in establishing the relationship between a patient's emotional illness and the onset of serious illness, died December 2, 2000. He was 85.

As a faculty member, Greene's work helped establish Rochester as the leading center for the "biopsychosocial" model of medicine, which encourages students to examine the connection between emotional factors and physical health.

A past president of the American Psychosomatic Society, Greene graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Medical School and served in the Army Medical Corps in World War II before coming to Rochester.

Edna Seidmann, senior lecturer in finance and accounting at the University's William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration, died November 1, 2000. She was 50.

She began teaching undergraduate courses at the Simon School in 1990 as a part-time instructor, and joined the full-time faculty in 1992.

She received the University's G. Graydon Curtis Award for Excellence in Teaching for a Nontenured Member of the Faculty in 1998.

Contributions in Seidman's memory can be made to the Melanoma Research Center at the University's James P. Wilmot Cancer Center, 601 Elmwood Avenue, Box 704, Rochester, N.Y. 14642
