John Weinzweig (Mas), president emeritus of the League of Canadian Composers and a longtime professor of music at the University of Toronto, is leading a campaign that chastises Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Radio for failing to support the work of Canadian composers, according to a December profile in the Toronto Star.

Patricia Paul Jaeger '53 (MM) writes that she has published Familiar Hymns With a Friend for harp and string quartet. "This is the third in my 'with a friend' series," she writes, "and it has 21 well-known hymns." The publisher is "Herald Music, my desktop publishing company (catalog free on request)," she notes. Jaeger also directs Serenaders, a harp and strings ensemble that has given free performances at nursing and retirement homes since 1974.

Gordon Peters (MM) received the Theodore Thomas Medallion for Distinguished Service from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra when he retired last spring. He had served as principal percussionist and assistant principal timpanist since 1959. While at the Eastman School, he founded the Marimba Masters, whose many performances included a date on the Ed Sullivan Show. He also composed the Swords of Moda-Ling for percussion ensemble and published a 368-page treatise on percussion entitled The Drummer: Man.

The National Capital Concert Band of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, celebrated its 15th anniversary in November under the direction of Stanley Clark (MM). The 60-piece band includes 20 of Clark's former students.

Paul Burgett '76 (PhD), vice president and general secretary at the University, has been appointed to the board of trustees of the Genesee Country Village & Museum.

Geary Larrick (MM) writes that he has four scholarly books listed in Books in Print 2000-2001. He also has a biography in the 13th edition of The International Who's Who of Intellectuals. . . . Robert Silverman (DMA) has released a 10-CD box set of all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas. The first Canadian in
a quarter century to undertake the project, Silverman recorded the sonatas over a period of several months. The box set, available on Orpheum Masters, also includes a 64-page booklet with Silverman's detailed notes on each sonata. . . . Christopher Vadala's creative productions include Chris Vadala Jazz Solos, Chris Vadala Fusion Solos, and Jazz/Rock in the USA. He is a contributing writer to a new Warner Brothers jazz educational book series. Director of jazz studies and saxophone professor at the University of Maryland, he was a visiting professor of saxophone at the Eastman School.

Linda DiMartino Wetherill writes that her recording as a solo flutist, Sound and Repercussion, has been released on the Albany label.

Jeff Tyzik '77 (MM), principal pops conductor for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, composed the melody for the official fight song of the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens. Ravens Fight Song-with lyrics by John Modell, the team's vice president and son of owner Art Modell-began life about two years ago when team officials asked Tyzik to write the music.

Kathy Bundock Moore '77 (MA), a professor of music theory and harp at the University of Northern Colorado, e-mails that she received the Distinguished Professor of the Year award from the school of music at Northern Colorado. Her recent collaborations with Mannheim Steamroller lead keyboardist Jackson Berkey have produced two collections of harp arrangements as well as two CDs. Moore, who is the music theory editor of the American Harp Journal, plays substitute principal harp with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra in Denver. She and her husband, Bruce, have a 14-year-old son who is an aspiring cellist, she writes. . . . William Runyan (MA) '83 (PhD) e-mailed to say he is spending the fall teaching in Europe at the University of Economics in Prague, Czech Republic. He also performed as trombonist on a recent CD recording of music for trombones and organs, All Day Meeting and Dinner on the Ground. The Journal of the International Trombone Association praised the performances as "exceptional."

Don Zimmer writes: "In October, I performed Bach's Concerto for Violin and Oboe with Sherry Sylar, associate principal oboist of the New York Philharmonic. I have been concertmaster of the Chattanooga, Tenn., Symphony/Opera since 1978. The conductor was Robert Bernhardt, former conductor of the Rochester Philharmonic."

Jim Doser '84 (MM) was honored as the departing director of the Eastman New Jazz Ensemble. He directed the Jazz Ensemble since 1993 and also is the coordinator of the artist-in-education program for suburban Rochester's Penfield school district, director of the Penfield Music Commission Project, and the Penfield High School Band director. . . . Walter Moran '81 (MM) was awarded his doctorate in educational leadership from Fordham University in May 2000. His dissertation, In Search of Artistry: A Comparitive Study of School Principals and Orchestral Conductors, received the Outstanding Dissertation of the Year award from Fordham's school of education. He is principal of Eastchester Middle School in New York and resides in Hawthorne, N.Y., with his wife, Kathryn, and two children, Daniel (16) and Meagan (14).

Dan Locklair (DMA) sends an update: The Wake Forest University Wind Ensemble premiered his work, A Pilgrim's Lot. The Amadeus Choir premiered his choral work, Gloria, in Canada, and several other of his works were performed in the United States and England. Shepherds Rejoice, performed by the Bel Canto Company, was broadcast over National Public Radio's Performance Today on December 18. . . . Walter Moran (MM) (see '79).

Howard Potter (MM) conducted the 315-member All Stars of Greater Syracuse, a group selected as a finalist in the Jazz at Lincoln Center's "Essentially Ellington" high school jazz band competition and festival. The group traveled in May to New York City to learn from Wynton Marsalis. Howard is also the music teacher at Pebble Hill School in Manlius, N.Y.

William Eddins '86 (MM), resident conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, was guest conductor during a performance of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in February. . . . Renee Fleming (MM) was a featured performer in the Metropolitan Opera's production of Mozart's Don Giovanni, which aired on PBS last winter. . . . William Runyan (PhD) (see '74).

Jim Doser (MM) (see '79). . . . Trumpeter Donald Sipe '85 (MM) e-mails to announce that he and his wife, Jennifer Startt, have a new daughter. Emmeline Rose Sipe was born on August 4, 2000. Don is based in Milwaukee, where he is president of Omicron Artist Management, Inc. Eastman alumni on the firm's roster include conductor and pianist William Eddins '83, '86 (MM), pianist Rei Hotoda '88, trombonist Scott Hartman '81, '83, and cellist Joseph Johnson '95. Jennifer is a member of the violin section of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.

Jeff Beal scored the film Pollock, chosen to do so by the film's actor-director Ed Harris. Beal has scored other productions, including Tom Hanks' From the Earth to the Moon. . . . Trombonist John Fedchock (MM) has released Hit The Bricks (Reservoir Music), an album of small-group jazz. Also appearing on the album is drummer Dave Ratajczak '80. . . . Brenda Leach (MM), '89 (DMA) sent an update: She has served as artistic director and conductor of the Boston Chamber Orchestra and has guest conducted engagements in Russia and Europe. A member and lecturer of the master class faculty at the
Rimsky-Korsakov College of Music in St. Petersburg, Russia, she also was associate director of the Peter the Great international master class for conductors there. . . . Donald Sipe (MM) (see '84). . . . Richard Zielinski (MM) has been named the music director of the Master Chorale of Tampa Bay. He previously served as director of choral activities at Indiana State University.

Robin Holtz Williams has been awarded a $68,600 grant from the Louisiana Board of Regents along with matching money from the University of New Orleans to purchase a new concert grand piano and a new grand piano for the school's recording studio. . . . William Eddins (MM) (see '83).

Brenda Leach (DMA) (see '85). . . . David Rivello (MM) will take over for Jim Doser '79, '84 (MM), as the director of the Eastman New Jazz Ensemble. He guest conducted his new original work, titled In the Shadow of the Wall, at the ensemble's last performance of the season in April.

George DeMott, lead vocalist on Crystal Cruise Lines' Crystal Symphony ship, returned to his high school alma mater, Penfield (N.Y.) High School, last December for a concert to raise money for the Robert DeMott Memorial Vocal Music Scholarship. The scholarship is named in honor of DeMott's younger brother, who was killed by a car in Penfield in 1985. DeMott, a tenor, toured with several opera companies before joining Crystal.

Ingrid Gordon e-mails that she and violinist and violist Anthea Kreston have received a project grant from the New York State Council on the Arts and the Saratoga Arts Council for a series of recitals in Saratoga County. For their first full-scale collaboration, the two adopted the name "ZuZu's Petals." . . . Marilyn Nonken has released her solo CD, American Spiritual, on CRI records. The album features works written for her by Milton Babbitt, Michael Finnissy, and other artists. Her 1999 recitals earned her several accolades, including being named "Best of 2000" in the Boston Globe year-end review. She also performed with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Bargemusic, and she serves as the artistic director and pianist of Ensemble 21, a contemporary music performance group that she co-founded. . . . Susan Sievert Messersmith (MM) and her husband, Charles, e-mailed to announce the birth of their son, Andrew Charles Messersmith, born December 18, 2000. Jonathan Coo (MM) was the pianist for a performance by leading Korean composer Geonyong Lee at the Center for the Performing and Creative Arts in Asia. The program featured Variations on a Korean Folk Tune for solo piano and Rhapsody for violin and piano.

Guy Capuzzo (PhD) e-mailed to announce that he married Sonia Archer in July. He is an assistant professor of music theory at Texas Tech University.
