FACULTY/ADMINISTRATION

Alfred Harris, professor emeritus of anthropology and longtime editor of the Lewis Henry Morgan Lectures, died February 14. He was 81.

Harris, who served as chair of the department from 1964 to 1971, is credited along with his wife, Grace Gredys, who also is a professor emeritus of anthropology, with playing a key role in establishing the Ph.D. program in anthropology in the early 1960s.

As editor of the Morgan Lectures, Harris edited 16 books, many of them now considered classics in the field.

Contributions in his memory may be sent to Planned Parenthood, 114 University Ave., Rochester, N.Y. 14605, or Amnesty International USA, 322 Eighth Ave., New York, N.Y. 10001.

Leonard Mandel, DuBridge Professor Emeritus of Physics and Optics at the University and one of the world's leading physicists, died February 9. He was 73.

One of the founders of a burgeoning branch of physics known as quantum optics-the study of the physics of light at its most fundamental level-Mandel was known internationally for his groundbreaking experiments on the nature of light and was the first to actually observe certain remarkable phenomena predicted by quantum theory.

At Rochester, he was known as an outstanding teacher, training 39 doctoral students who are now in physics programs around the world. In 1992, Mandel was awarded the University's Faculty Award for Graduate Teaching.

He also developed the University's first physics course geared specifically for nonscience majors, teaching the course regularly for 20 years.

A recipient of the Frederic Ives Medal and Max Born Award of the Optical Society of America, the Italian National Research Council's Marconi Medal, and the Thomas Young Medal from the British Institute of Physics, Mandel was a fellow of the American Physical Society, the Optical Society of America, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was elected posthumously to the National Academy of Sciences.

Roger Mertin, professor of art and art history, died at his home in Rochester on May 6. He was 58.

An internationally known photographer, Mertin joined the Rochester faculty in 1972.

Mertin was considered a master darkroom technician. His works are in the collections of national and international museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, and the National Gallery of Canada, which owns more than 400 pieces.

In his memory, the University's Department of Art and Art History has established a scholarship fund for outstanding undergraduate students. Contributions may be sent to: Mertin Fund, Department of Art and Art History, Morey Hall, P.O. Box 270456, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY 14627-0456.

Bernard N. Schilling, the John B. Trevor Professor Emeritus of English and Comparative Literature who specialized in 18th century English literature and Charles Dickens, died February 9. He was 94.

A Rochester professor for 38 years, Schilling joined the Rochester faculty as an associate professor of English in 1947. From 1952 to 1962, he was director of graduate studies in English and in 1961 was appointed to the named professorship.

He is credited with establishing the graduate program in English at the University in the early 1960s.

Gifts in his memory may be directed to the Friends of the University of Rochester Libraries' Bernard Schilling Memorial Fund, 236 Rush Rhees Library, P.O. Box 270055, University of Rochester, Rochester, N.Y. 14627-0055.
