Professor James VanDemark is a masterful double bassist and pedagogue whose artistry and teaching continue to inspire musicians worldwide, leaving an enduring impact on generations to come. His teachings have been paramount in how I teach!
What's your most memorable Rochester hangout?
Java's was always a good time for a drink and a cookie!
If you could relive one day on campus, what would it be?
I wish I could relive the first day of class. Especially in Studio Class, where we would welcome and get to hear new people, it was such an inspiration to hear the talent and the potential of what's to come.
How do you live the Meliora values everyday?
I strive to be ever better every day for my students. As a music educator, I often think about how I can use my voice to uplift the next generation. Equity, leadership, and integrity are specific lens in which I use to do so.
What’s one thing you learned about yourself during your time at Rochester?
I love to learn. What I value most out of my time is that I learned how to learn. The world will keep changing, and so long as I keep learning, it will be a very exciting journey through life.
What advice would you give an incoming student?
Anything that you are curious about, keep learning and discovering more- this is the place to do it.
