Gifts of securities and stocks

By giving appreciated stocks, bonds, and mutual fund shares that have been owned for more than one year, you can avoid capital gains tax. You also receive an income tax deduction for the fair market value of the gift.

A security’s gift value is determined by its fair market value on the day you make the gift. In the case of certificates mailed to us, the date of gift is the date of mailing; if the shares are transferred to the University on the books of a broker or agent, then the gift date is the date of transfer.

To make a gift of securities or stock, please contact the Office of Gift and Donor Services at (585) 275-8602 or email giftoffice@admin.rochester.edu for specific instructions.

Planned giving

A life-income gift, such as a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust, is a gift that pays you income for life. A bequest to the University in your will or designating the University as a beneficiary on a retirement fund are ways to provide future support while retaining access to your assets during your lifetime. If you inform the University of your plans, your commitment will be included in the total amount reported for your class gift. For more information on ways to build your reunion gift, visit the gift planning website.

Learn about how a planned gift qualifies you to become a member of The Wilson Society.

For a personal illustration or confidential conversation about these and other gift options, contact the Office of Trusts, Estates & Gift Planning by calling (585) 275-8894 or 1-800-MELIORA (1-800-635-4672) or emailing giftplanning@rochester.edu.

Gift matching

Many employers have a policy that can effectively double or even triple the amount of contributions of cash or securities by employees and their spouses or partners. Your Human Resources Department should be able to share if they offer such a program. The total amount of your personal pledge, including the match from your employer, will count toward your recognition. If you are celebrating your reunion, it will also count toward your class gift campaign.
