What happens if your circadian rhythms are out of whack?

A new Wilmot Cancer Institute study shows that cancer cells that carry a certain gene will grow rapidly and divide after shutting down their own circadian rhythms.

Network with health care professionals

Are you looking to explore professions in the health care field? Join the Greene Center today, October 24, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Feldman Ballroom to network with health care professionals and current Medical Center students in a variety of fields. There may be opportunities to gain a mentor that you will be able to connect with throughout the year. Food will be provided.

Event highlights safe-sex resources

The UHS Health Promotion Office hosts its annual “Sex and Chocolate Carnival” on Monday, October 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. in Hirst Lounge. Celebrate Halloween with candy, safer sex supplies, giveaways, raffles, and Insomnia Cookies for the first 100 attendees. Organizations represented will include Planned Parenthood, the Title IX Office, RESTORE, and Trillium Health.

‘Hallo-Queer’ and ‘BIC-Ture This’ for LGBTQ students

LGBTQ students can find free pumpkins to paint, candy apples, donuts, cider, apples, and Halloween candy on Sunday, October 29, between noon and 5 p.m. at the Burgett Intercultural Center, 305 Douglass Commons. Register by Friday, October 27.

LGBTQ students can also sign up to knit their own scarf on Friday, November 3, during the “BIC-Ture This” art making series. All supplies are provided. Register to attend by Friday, October 27.

Campus Information Center resources

The Campus Information Center (CIC), formally Common Connection, located on the second floor of Wilson Commons, provides information and campus resources. The CIC also serves as a hub for lost and found, masks, safe sex supplies, and equipment including tech adapters, power banks, seasonal affective disorder lamps, hammocks, and more. In addition to the available resources, the CIC collects electronics, batteries, printer toner for recycling, and Food Pantry donations. Find more information on hours and how to connect.

EAP ‘Connect for Support‘ session

You may be struggling to understand how and why recent acts of violence can occur, or why terrible events seem to happen so frequently. UR Medicine EAP (Employee Assistance Program) is offering a space for all University employees to connect for support virtually on Wednesday, October 25, at noon. These sessions are led by an EAP counselor and designed to help employees recognize their own symptoms of distress and to create a space for employees to support one another. Register here.

Community-engaged teaching and learning networking session

The Community-Engaged Learning Program is hosting an in-person networking and professional development social on Thursday, November 2, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Welles-Brown Room, Rush Rhees Library, for any faculty member in AS&E interested in learning more about community-engaged teaching and learning. RSVP by October 27.

Last-minute child or adult care from Care.com

The University offers eligible faculty and staff access to subsidized backup care through Care.com when there is a temporary breakdown in normal care arrangements for children or adults. Find more information here and start your request today.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month webinar

Learn how to be an advocate for your own breast health during this informational session. Rochester medical professionals will discuss how best to communicate with your healthcare providers and present research on breast cancer, risk factors, and genetic testing. Hosted in collaboration with Women in Medicine, the event takes place virtually today, October 24, at 11 a.m. Register now.

Simon Business School happy hour

Are you (or someone in your network) in the Rochester area and considering business school? Attend a Simon Business School happy hour on Thursday, October 26, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at TRATA. Enjoy drinks and appetizers and learn more about programs, network with fellow professionals, and get to know the Simon community. University employees can find information on tuition benefits and merit-based scholarship opportunities. Feel free to bring a friend or partner along. Registration is encouraged but walk-ins are welcome.

Presentation on Alzheimer's disease and prevention research

Join Anton Porsteinsson, director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Care, Research and Education Program, on Monday, October 30, for a presentation about Alzheimer’s disease, research developments, and prevention research opportunities. Attend a Bread and Puppet Theatre performance

The International Theatre Program and the Institute for the Performing Arts are sponsoring a trip to SUNY Geneseo for a performance of Bread and Puppet Theatre’s Inflammatory Earthling Rants (with help from Kropotkin). The performance takes place Thursday, November 2, at 7 p.m. Learn more and register here by Friday, October 27, at 5 p.m. Transportation is provided.

The event takes place Sunday, November 12, from noon to 4 p.m.
