Supercomputer advances fusion research and efficient energy production

The University’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics is home to Conesus, one of the world’s most energy-efficient supercomputers. With the capacity to create and store clean energy from nuclear fusion and building on last year’s ignition milestone, researchers believe that energy efficiency goals are more possible than ever before. Drop-in counseling groups

The University Counseling Center will host drop-in counseling sessions via Zoom this week for Grief for Gaza on Thursday, January 18, at 3 p.m. and Grief for Israel on Friday, January 19, at 3 p.m.

Winter Activities Fair

Undergraduate students: are you interested in learning more about how you can get involved on campus and pursue your passions? Check out all the student organizations at the annual Winter Activities Fair taking place on Friday, January 19, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on the Zornow Courts, inside the Goergen Athletic Center. This Rochester Tradition can help you explore opportunities to connect, engage, and take in informational displays from over 200 student organizations. Presented by Wilson Commons Student Activities.

Council On International Educational Exchange student challenge

Student leaders can participate in the second annual Council On International Educational Exchange (CIEE) United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) student challenge. Enter this three-round competition with a group of your peers and create ideas to support increasing access to higher education and livelihood for forcibly displaced youth around the world. Develop solutions to help refugees and earn a trip to London. Register your team by Friday, February 9. Find more details on the CIEE website. CIEE is a University partner in education abroad programs.

HR Intercom highlights CPM and more

This month’s issue of HR Intercom, a newsletter with information about Human Resources programs and materials, includes information on the launch of Career Path Modernization, support for performance evaluations, and more.

Get feedback on your data management and sharing plan

Last year, a new National Institutes of Health (NIH) policy for data management and sharing went into effect. On Thursday, January 18, data librarians Heather Owen (River Campus Libraries) and Ehsan Moghadam (Miner Libraries) are holding a Zoom-based session to review the NIH policy and review and critique sample plans. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions about their plans. Register here.

Research Catalyst Funds to study the environment and health

Up to $50,000 is available in Research Catalyst Funds to study the environment and health. A broad spectrum of research will be considered, including research that addresses climate change and health, environmental justice, how environmental factors influence health and disease over the lifespan, and factors in food, water, and air that modulate health. Funding is cosponsored by the NIEHS Environmental Health Sciences Center and the Institute of Human Health and the Environment. Preliminary proposals are due February 13 and full proposals are due March 27.

Claims now being accepted for the Child Care Subsidy

Those who were approved for the 2024 Child Care Subsidy can now log into Lifetime Benefit Solutions and start the claim/reimbursement process. Submit a claim via the Lifetime Benefit Solutions member portal or mobile app. You also can complete a claim form and mail it to Lifetime Benefit Solutions. If you have not previously logged into your Lifetime Benefit Solutions account, review the new user instructions. For more information, visit the Family Care website.

Toastmasters guest day

Join the University’s Daybreakers Toastmasters club for a guest day, food and beverages included. Toastmasters is a supportive and positive group that can help you improve your public speaking and presentation skills. The event takes place virtually via Zoom or in person in the Louis Slaughter Conference Room (1-9555), Medical Center, on Thursday, January 18, at 7:30 a.m. Email vpm-3685@toastmastersclubs.org for more information.

Virtual talk on the MobilEyes Vision Van

Visit the Center for Community Health & Prevention’s Facebook page on Thursday, January 18, any time after 11 a.m. for a presentation from Matthew Gearinger, a professor of ophthalmology and pediatrics and associate chair for education at the Flaum Eye Institute. “MobilEyes Vision Van Increases Access to Eye Care in Underserved Communities,” is part of the center’s “Got Health?” series. Learn more about the impact of the MobilEyes Vision Van and how it’s making vision screenings accessible for youth throughout the region. This talk is a special event for National Eye Care Month.

Data visualization competition ceremony

Data Bloom, a series of data visualization workshops held by the River Campus Libraries, is wrapping up with a ceremony to recognize the top student-made visualizations on Monday, January 29, from 1 to 3 p.m. in Carlson Library’s VISTA Collaboratory. The Rochester community will have an opportunity to vote for the best visualization and enjoy light refreshments. Register to attend.

Nominations open for Student Life Awards

The annual Student Life Awards recognize students in the College who—through service to others, investment of talent and time, and pursuit of excellence—have significantly and positively affected the University and surrounding community. Nominations are open through February 5. Review the available awards and submit nominations online. The awards are sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Students in the College.
