Lysle "Spike" Garnish

  • Captained the freshman football team at Syracuse, but left in 1926 because of illness
  • Completed his education at Rochester's Extension Division
  • Joined the University in 1930
  • Became a trainer and assistant basketball coach in 1931, named an assistant baseball coach in 1932
  • Assistant football coach from 1945-48
  • Also coached the freshman basketball and baseball teams and served as tennis coach
  • Left the University in 1949 to become assistant director of industrial recreation at Eastman Kodak
  • Appointed basketball and baseball coach at Hobart College in 1950
  • Coached at Hobart for 10 years until he succumbed to a heart attack on December 4, 1960
  • The "Spike" Garnish Fund was created at Rochester in 1971 to provide financial assistance, according to individual need, to Rochester students on the basis of outstanding performance and personal qualities, including leadership, as demonstrated through intercollegiate athletics
  • The Garnish Memorial Citation is given annually to an alumnus, faculty member, or a staff member for dedication and contributions to the intercollegiate athletic program
