  • Earned an M.A. degree from Haverford College in 1938, and an M.A. degree from Harvard University in 1940
  • Member of the Far Eastern Commission and Deputy Secretary General from 1946-1948
  • Mayor of the city of Schenectady, NY from 1956-1959
  • Elected to Congress from four districts in New York from 1959-1981
  • Elected as a U.S. Representative to Congress from Amsterdam, NY in 1981
  • Was the third ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee and Chairman of its Procurement and Military Nuclear Systems Subcommittee in 1986
  • In 1958, he earned the University's Presidential Citation
  • In 1978, he received the University's Hutchinson medal
  • Four years later, the National Veterans of Foreign Wars presented him with its Congressional Award for Outstanding Service to the Nation
