John Vitone

  • 25 years as an assistant football coach at the University
  • Spent 17 seasons as the Defensive Coordinator for football
  • Instrumental in attracting many outstanding student-athletes to the University and was well known for his recruiting ability and style
  • Also served as the Coordinator of Club Sports for the Department of Sports and Recreation from 1977 to 1991
  • Graduated from Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH in 1955 (B.S. - Physical Education)
  • Earned All-Ohio honors as an offensive guard in college
  • Served as a graduate assistant defensive line coach from 1955-57
  • Master's degree in Physical Education in 1957
  • Served in U.S. Air Force from 1957-60
  • Duty in Fairbanks, AK where he coached the base football team
  • Returned to Western Reserve as Assistant Football Coach and Head Basketball Coach from 1960-64
  • Chairman of Physical Education Department of Cleveland's Cathedral Latin High School from 1964-67
  • Came to Rochester in 1967
  • Passed away in December, 1992, after a lengthy illness
  • The varsity weight room was renamed in his honor
