Masters in Linguistics

Suhasini Patni

(She/Her/Hers)

Why did you choose UR for graduate education (other than for your advisor)?

I'm Suhasini, a second-year master's student in the Department of Linguistics. I chose U of R for graduate education because of the diversity in my cohort, large international student population, and my advisor Dr. Maya Abtahian.

What resources or services (social, academic, or anything else) have you found most helpful at UR?

There are multiple resources on campus that are super helpful—but it is always the most basic ones that turn out to be most advantageous. The library is an excellent resource for all your needs, both academic and entertainment. For example, the arts and music library has gaming consoles and DVD players and a large array of films to choose from. I also love the Greene Center and various student groups on campus, especially Grad Students of Color.

What are your favorite spots on or off-campus (restaurants, festivals, natural trails, or whatever) in Rochester?

I love the various waterfalls surrounding Rochester. My favorite gorge trails are Watkins Glens and Buttermilk Falls. I also the Little Theater and Dryden Theater and Akimbo Bookstore. Coming to America has been fascinating in terms of diversity of food. Although I still haven't tried a garbage plate, I do recommend Aladdin's Natural Eatery, Sichuan Opera, and Abyssinia Restaurant.
