FACULTY/ADMINISTRATION

Frederick Klipstein, emeritus professor of medicine, microbiology, and immunology at the School of Medicine and Dentistry, died August 15, 2001. He was 79.

An expert on tropical sprue-a chronic, debilitating disease-Klipstein is the author of chapters on the disease in 10 medical textbooks. He also conducted in 1985 what are believed to have been the first clinical trials of a completely synthetic vaccine in humans.

Klipstein published more than 100 articles in scientific journals and was given the Excellence in Teaching award five times while at Rochester. He was an active volunteer at the University's AIDS clinic.
