Schedule a Training

The Office of Disability Resources offers educational programming for faculty and staff upon request. Programs can be tailored to fit your needs, or you may pick from the programs below. Program requests can be made by emailing disability@rochester.edu. Please allow a two week turnaround for scheduling. Note: It is the responsibility of the person requesting the training to secure a location. 

Disability @UR (30 minutes)

This session provides a basic overview of disability services and procedures at the University of Rochester. We’ll review the supports available to students with disabilities along with the steps for getting them connected. We’ll also cover the services and resources available to faculty and staff in their work supporting students with disabilities.

Teaching Students with Disabilities 101 (1 hour)

This workshop, designed for both new and seasoned instructors, covers the basics of what you need to know to teach students with disabilities at UR. Included this session are general legal obligations, the logistics and practicalities of coordinating accommodations at UR, resources available for supporting inclusive instruction, and strategies for how to think about and respond to a variety of scenarios.

Intro to UDL and Inclusive Teaching for Instructors (1 hour)

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an approach to designing course instruction, materials, and content to benefit all students without adaptation or retrofitting. In this interactive session designed for instructors, we’ll explore the basics of UDL and other inclusive teaching principles, discuss simple strategies for making courses more inclusive, and practice putting those strategies into action in your individual courses.

Intro to Universal Design and Inclusive Practices for Staff/Students (1 hour)

Universal Design is an approach to designing environments, materials, and activities to benefit all people without the need for adaptation or retrofitting. In this interactive session designed for staff or student groups, we’ll explore the basics of Universal Design and provide tools, tips, and resources for creating a more inclusive campus.

Creating Accessible Materials (45 minutes)

Learn how to adapt handouts, videos, websites, and classroom materials to be more accessible for people with disabilities. This interactive session teaches participants practical steps for creating accessible materials from the get go and modifying those you already have that may be less than perfectly accessible.

Communication Access for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students (45 minutes)

This session, available for faculty, staff, and/or students, covers the basics for ensuring communication access for Deaf/HOH students in both academic and non-academic settings. We’ll cover procedures for securing ASL interpreters, best practices in working with interpreters, tips for creating accessible media, and other resources, services, and strategies that can help ensure real-time access.
