Introduction to College Teaching

Introduction to College Teaching is designed to provide graduate student and postdoctoral instructors with the tools and skills they need to successfully design and teach a course, with an emphasis on compressed summer formats.

By the end of the four-week program, they will have:

  • Created course materials, including a course syllabus with measurable learning outcomes;
  • Designed activities and assessments that facilitate student learning; and
  • Developed skills to create a community of inquiry with students in your online course.

By the end of the program, graduate student summer instructors will be able to do the following in compressed online (synchronous and/or asynchronous) courses:

  • Apply backward design principles to develop and align course learning outcomes, assessments, and learning activities.
  • Design and teach an online course using evidence-based practices, including applying the Quality Matters framework, building a community of inquiry, and transparent assignment design.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible to enroll in this program, you must be:

  • Enrolled as a graduate student or employed by the University as a postdoctoral fellow.

    and/or
  • Registered as instructor of record in a University of Rochester summer semester course.

We typically can accommodate most applicants and encourage you to register if you are interested in participating.

This program will meet in person on the River Campus on Thursdays, April 10, 17, 24, and May 1, from 3-6 p.m.
