Is CARE an Acronym?
No. CARE is the name associated with our student data management system.
What is the “CARE team”?
The CARE team is a small, confidential group of campus officials who meet weekly to discuss students of concern. Currently, this group comprises a representative from Residential Life, UR Public Safety, UCC, graduate relations, the College Center for Academic Support, and the Office of the Dean of Students.
Is the CARE Network confidential?
When you are concerned about a student, we encourage you to speak directly with that student about the fact that you are going to submit a CARE Referral. However, we understand this is not always possible.
In instances when you would like to keep the fact that you submitted a CARE Referral confidential, please indicate this in the CARE Referral. It is important to note, however, that confidentiality cannot be kept at all times and students may realize that you submitted a referral through indirect ways (such as details related to the incident or information only shared by the student with one person on campus).
CARE Referrals have no impact on student's academic standing or records.
What concerns are typically referred to the CARE network?
Students with significant academic and mental health concerns are most often referred to the CARE network. Referrals are made regularly, with an increase in referrals made at the mid-term and conclusion of the semester. More and more referrals are being made that assist in our ability to recognize students heading toward crisis before an official crisis occurs.
What is the Student Support Network (SSN)?
The SSN is a group of approximately 30 to 40 individuals representing many campus offices. The SSN meets monthly to discuss the role these offices play in helping students, "hot topics" on college campuses, preventative efforts available at UR, and other topics that relate with student success. The SSN members review a list of students of concern once a week and share additional information to a CARE staff member. The SSN epitomizes collaboration and education for the benefit of student success and operates under the highest of ethical standards.
What happens after a CARE Referral is submitted?

Who can submit a CARE Referral?
Any individual connected with the University of Rochester community is welcome to submit a CARE Referral. Faculty, staff, students, parents, or anyone who knows a UR student can submit a CARE Referral. Students are also welcome to submit a CARE Referral about themselves.
Is my concern great enough to warrant a CARE Referral?
We appreciate having more information rather than less information when it comes to assisting students in need. Please review Questions to Consider Before Submitting a CARE Referral for more guidance on referring a student to CARE. You may also contact a CARE staff member at CAREnetwork@rochester.edu or (585) 275-4085 to discuss your concern prior to submitting.
How do I know if my CARE Referral was received?
Upon pressing "submit" you will be redirected to a page thanking you for your submission. If you do not receive this message, please contact a CARE staff member at (585) 275-4085 to report the problem. In certain circumstances you may be contacted to provide additional information about your referral. If you are not contacted and you have received the submission message, rest assured that your referral is being reviewed and acted upon. If you would like an update on the student about whom you submitted a CARE Referral, please contact a CARE staff member at CAREnetwork@rochester.edu. We will share information regarding this student as appropriate and in the student's best interest.
How do I know if a student is on the CARE list?
Only a small group of campus representatives (the Student Support Network) are aware of the names of students on the CARE list. An even smaller group of individuals (the CARE team) are given the details needed to effectively triage the student in need. This list of names is kept confidential so as not to affect or bias other areas of the student's experience. The CARE list is intended to identify students in or heading toward distress, and provide these students with assistance via appropriate campus resources.
If you happen to submit a CARE Referral regarding a student already identified on the CARE list, your information will simply be added to the previously existing CARE Referral(s). Each CARE Referral provides a unique perspective that is likely to assist in identifying the most appropriate campus resource for the student in need.
Can CARE be utilized for graduate as well as undergraduate students?
Yes. CARE Referrals can be submitted for any student (graduate or undergraduate) at the University of Rochester.
