Whether you're looking to get some extra prep for college-level courses, focus on a potentially challenging course, or just explore a subject area of interest, the University's Summer Session offers classes in a variety of disciplines and 4, 6, or 12-week lengths to best fit your goals—and your summer plans.
As an incoming first-year or transfer student, you can take up to two online Summer Session courses. Don't worry—almost all summer classes are specifically tailored to be completed online, so you'll have plenty of course offerings to choose from. Summer calendar
The University of Rochester's summer term is divided into multiple 4-and 6-week sessions, as well as one 12-week session. This means that the registration and academic deadlines for the course(s) you are interested in will depend on what session the course falls in. Use the button below to review the summer calendar for session-specific registration deadlines.
Register for class
To register for summer classes as an incoming student, you will need to follow a three-step process. Expand each item below for detailed instructions.
Please note: This process can take up to 20 business days to complete, so we highly recommend beginning this process at least 4 weeks before the first day of the course(s) you are interested in taking to ensure you're registered ahead of the start of class.
You can find the full listing of summer courses on both the Course Description and Course Schedule (also called CDCS), the University's course catalog. We recommend selecting 3-5 course options to discuss with the academic advisor, who will help you narrow down your selection to your final 1 or 2 courses.
To find Summer 2024 classes on CDCS:
- Navigate to the CDCS website.
- Select Summer 2024 as the Year/Term.
- Select Arts, Sciences, and Engineering as the School.
- Use the additional fields to search by subject, course type, meeting days or times, and more.
- Please note: Most Summer 2024 classes are available to take online. Any summer classes with CDCS course locations listed as on-campus spaces (e.g., Dewey Room 2110D), will have a corresponding online version.
After selecting your course options, you are required to schedule an online appointment with an academic advisor in the College Center for Advising Services to get approval of your final course selections.
- If you are intending to pursue a program in the School of Arts & Sciences (or if you are unsure of your program of study), you should select School of Arts & Sciences: 30 Min ZOOM Advising on the first screen.
- If you are intending to pursue a program in the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, select Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences ZOOM on the first screen.
Once you meet with an academic advisor and finalize your summer course selections, the advisor will send you an email with a link to a registration form titled Non-Matriculated Registration Form: New Student Summer Opportunity.
Download the fillable PDF form, complete it (making sure to fill out all the details for your final summer course selections), and save the file. Email the PDF file to registrar@rochester.edu with your full name in the subject line or body of the email. Within 3-5 business days of sending your email, the Registrar will send you a confirmation email with your course registration details and your next steps.
Get ready for class
Make sure to read and follow the instructions in your enrollment confirmation email from the Registrar's Office, including how to:
- Set up your NetID and Active Directory credentials, which allow you to log into a variety of online services and systems affiliated with the University
- Enroll in Duo, the University's two-factor authentication tool
- Log into UR Student, the University's student information system, and complete the required onboarding steps
- Log into and navigate Blackboard, the University's learning management system
If you need to contact your instructor before the first day of class, you can send them an email through Blackboard. On the first day of class, your instructor will share their preferred communication method for students, so you'll know how to get in touch with them throughout the course. Additionally, we recommend waiting until the first day of class before purchasing any textbooks or course materials, as your instructor might have specific directions for purchases or rentals for summer courses.
Pay for class
The tuition rate for Summer 2024 classes is $1,100 per credit hour (or $4,400 total for a 4-credit class). Payment for your courses is due 16 days after your successful course registration or one week prior to the start of the class—whichever date occurs first. If payment is not received no later than one week prior to the first day of class, you will be deregistered.
You can pay your Summer Sessions tuition bill online through UR Student using a funds transfer or debit or credit card, or by mail. Learn more about payment methods on the Tuition page.

On-campus summer housing is not available for incoming first-year and transfer students enrolled in Summer Sessions classes.
No, financial aid is not available for incoming students taking summer classes before they begin their first full-time semester at the University of Rochester.
It depends on the course and instructor. You should discuss the possibility of auditing a course with the academic advisor during the registration process. Learn more about auditing on the academics page.
Yes, but we highly discourage it. Summer classes are usually more fast-paced than academic-year classes, due to their shorter lengths. Therefore, it is much easier to fall behind if you miss a few classes, especially in the first week. Learn about the process for adding a summer class on the academics page.
As long the drop deadline for your course has not passed, you can drop a summer class on your own in UR Student, the University's student registration system. View detailed instructions for completing the drop process in UR Student on the academics page.
Please note: you may only be eligible for a partial tuition refund depending on the day you drop the course, as the tuition refund schedule differs from the add/drop schedule.
You can withdraw from the class. This process removes the course from your summer registration but keeps it on your transcript with a "W" listed as the grade. Learn more about course withdrawals on the academics page.
You will be eligible for a full or partial tuition refund as long as you drop or withdraw from the course by the deadline listed on the 2024 Summer Session calendar. If you drop or withdraw after the deadline to receive a 50% refund, you will not receive any tuition refund. Learn more about dropping and withdrawing from a course on the academics page.
