International Student Photo Contest

If you are a current international student on the F-1 or J-1 visa who studied at the University of Rochester between 2020-2023, you are eligible to enter your photos in for the International Student Photo Contest!

Open to both undergraduate and graduate students, the contest features five categories with prizes awarded in each category. Entries are limited to three (3) photos total throughout the categories.

Submission Deadline: 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, March 5

Categories

UR Experience: A captured moment of your time at UR- campus activities, excursions, and ways that the study abroad experience has been your classroom.

International Culture: Capture a moment in the US which celebrated international culture, in-or-out of the classroom.

US Sightseeing: Wonders of the US, and unique landscapes, cities, and monuments.

Local Rochester Culture: Fairs, festivals, ceremonies, celebrations, food and people unique to Rochester.

Most Epic Selfie: A selfie embodying your adventures abroad. School pride encouraged! (Disclaimer: University of Rochester does not encourage dangerous activities that would put your health and safety at risk. Please refer to the Standards of Student Conduct.)

Prizes

A $50 prize will be awarded for each category as well as the grand prize/community vote.

Photo

You MUST adhere to the following restrictions in order to upload your photo:

  • File size may not exceed 5 MB.
  • Photo must be a minimum of 1,600 pixels on its longer dimension.
  • Photo must be of JPEG format (.jpg, .jpeg).
  • Caption must be a maximum of 256 characters long.
  • Submissions are limited to two (2) photos per category.

Terms and Conditions

Eligibility—This contest is open to University of Rochester undergraduates or graduate international students sponsored on the F-1 or J-1 visa by University of Rochester. You must have been an enrolled student between 2020-2023. Photos must have been taken during this time-period.

Each entrant must complete an entry form that includes the entrant's name, telephone number, email address, class year, major, hometown, country, and a brief caption describing each photo.

Each entrant must agree to all the rules for the contest outlined here.

Categories—Students may enter their photos in five categories: 1) UR Experience; 2) International Culture; 3) US Sightseeing; 4) Local Rochester Culture; 5) Most Epic Selfie. Students may enter more than one category but are limited to no more than three (3) photos total submitted. Images may be entered at different times during the contest period.

To be entered in the contest, photos must be uploaded to the contest's website and must meet the contest's technical requirements (see "Technical Requirements.")

Rights—By entering the contest, each entrant acknowledges that the photos are the creative work of the submitting student, that the rights to the photos are owned by the submitting student, and that the submitted photos do not violate copyright, fair use, or other commonly accepted guidelines for producing or reproducing creative work.

Each entering student grants the University the right to reproduce the entrant's images and publish the entrant's name, class year, major, and hometown in Rochester Review, on an accompanying website about the contest, in photographic exhibitions on campus, and in University-produced materials about the contest and other promotional materials produced by the University and its representatives. The copyright for the images remains with the student.

Student’s submissions may be used on social media platforms including but not limited to Instagram, during the community vote or any other promotional materials after the end of the contest. The University of Rochester reserves the right not to publish any entry.

Technical Requirements—Images submitted for the contest must be in the jpeg (.jpg) format. No image may be larger than 5 MB and each image must be at least 1,600 pixels on the longer axis. Images must be uploaded through the contest's website in order to be eligible.

Judging—A panel including University staff from the Center for Education Abroad, the Office for Global Engagement, the International Services Office, and students will judge the contest. Images will be evaluated on their creativity and on their photographic quality. Out of all entries, the judges will select a winner for each category. A grand prize/community vote will also be awarded. In the event of a tie among the judges, the editorial staff of Rochester Review will select the winners.

Awards—Awards will be presented to the winners in each category. No single entrant is eligible for more than one (1) prize in each category. A grand prize/community vote will be awarded amongst the winners of the categories. A winner of a particular category may also win the grand prize. No entrant can win more than three (3) awards in any single contest.

Deadline—Photos must be submitted through the contest's website by 11:59 p.m. on March 5. Images will only be accepted through the contest's website.
